Post by: Richard on August 26, 2015, 07:02:28 AM

A couple of exciting add-ons to the add-ons...

The Vangroovy Banquet
We will be drawing the first two winners to sit at the top table* with Richard Dean Anderson on March 1st, as a thanks to everyone who has paid for their banquet ticket by the 29th February. Winners announced HERE (http://www.gatecon.com/forum/index.php?topic=97.msg2645#msg2645)

Also, thanks to our friends at Legends, we will be giving away this photograph, signed by Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Chris Judge, to one lucky person at the banquet

A winner will be picked at random on the night, and will be presented with the signed photo that normally retails for $195.00

*tickets drawn for the top table are for one person only, not for couples or groups. If you do not wish to be seated away from travel companions please let us know and we will redraw.

Plus, don't forget that one lucky attendee will be drawn at random during the closing ceremony to win the Stargate Legacy Coverstone Heirloom, valued at CAD$1750, courtesy of Legends

The Vangroovy Banquet - OE
With the ongoing 1960's theme, this is another chance for you to re-strut your stuff in your Vangroovy outfit! Please note a costume is by no means compulsory so the banquet is open to Absolutely Everybody. Some of our special guests will also be in attendance.

The Homecoming Vangroovy Banquet
Friday 9th September 2015

Question : When is a banquet not just a banquet?
Answer : When it is The Homecoming Vangroovy Banquet!

As you know, when it comes to The Homecoming nothing is ever boring. That includes the Vangroovy Banquet. We wanted to provide more than just a room and a meal. This needed to be an experience, an evening full of entertainment and memories that will stay with you long after the convention has ended.

The ticket price includes:

This is a Vangroovy event, therefore you are welcome to wear your 1960's outfits (although not obligatory!)

Seats for the banquet are strictly limited so be sure to grab yours now to avoid disappointment. Seating is unassigned for the banquet so you can choose to sit wherever you wish, unless any places are marked as reserved.

We anticipate that some of our other special guests will attend the banquet and they will be seated at random throughout the room - so you never know who you may end up sitting next to for dinner!

THE DAY TRIPPERS

Vancouver's very own Beatles experience, The Day Trippers will be joining us on Friday 9th September playing all the hit Beatles songs from 10pm until late, following on from Gary Jones improv comedy with special guest Ellie Harvie.

Testimonials :

"The Day Trippers were a huge success at our banquet, so thank you so much for that. We had great feedback from the delegates. I don’t think I have seen the dance floor so packed right up to  the end of the evening... and we all knew all the words to every song, and just kept singing!"
– Marion

“Awesome night with The Day Trippers playing two full sets of The Beatles’ best. As authentic and Beatle-like as I have ever seen and heard, and I come from across the pond so have seen my fair share of British tribute bands! I would love these guys to have a homecoming gig back in Liverpool Merseyside!”
– Cecilia
Pitt Meadows, BC

“The Day Trippers got the crowd up and jiving to 60s rock n blues at the beautiful setting of Deep Cove this evening! Great nostalgia! Talented band with amazing harmonies, riffs and rhythms just like the original band!”

This was the best! I got some amazing candid pics with some of the guests who came and am still amazed how friendly and approachable many of the guests were. So different than other conventions where security keeps you at arms length from saying hello.

This is one of the reasons that I love Gatecon and never balk at volunteering my time to help keep it going.  It really feels like a family that you see once a year-ish.

I went to something like this, it was a dessert banquet though with some of the guests walking around and chatting but they only went to a few tables. I was way disappointed in it. So not sure I'd be open to forking out extra money for this but I'll think about it, I've got time :D

This is one of those events that changes a little bit each time it's done.  It's always a sit-down dinner and several of the guests are there, but how the seating arrangements are done is a little different each time.

Richard and co will probably have more details about it once they get a few more plans in place.

Silly question- for this, will it be possible to get a special meal accommodation? (As the user name implies, I'm vegan.  As the name also implies, though picky, i always appreciate when a meal is accommodated and won't complain if it's something my picky self doesn't actually like and will still proffer profuse thanks).

Question, The seating at the Banquet is not assigned is it?

In 2008 it wasn't because there was a limited number of seats. I sat with friends.

Question, The seating at the Banquet is not assigned is it?

There are usually a couple of 'Reserved' tables for certain folks, but beyond that, I *think* it's usually open seating.

You will find that it will be a topic of discussion when we get there. At the 1st one I attended, I was worried that all the tables would be full and I couldn't sit with people that I had made friends with. It worked out well because we were all in the same boat. 😊

That helps me out then.. cause I wasn't sure what the crack was...
hopefully we can sit with other lovely peoples that we meet :D

Yup we are still discussing the banquet layout. At first it was going to be assigned seating but we are leaning towards a couple of "reserved tables" and then leave it so you can all choose your own places after that.

I think that should make for a more pleasant atmosphere than being told where to sit, plus less hassle both in the planning stage now and on the night with people all trying to check a seating plan and match it up with the tables in the room. It also means any alterations between now and then won't affect pre-assigned seats!

I'm sold on the non-assigned scenario!!

One of the things we did in 2010 was set up reserved tables for the guests and some other key folks, then auctioned off a couple of seats at those tables for attendees to sit at the 'guest' tables during the banquet.  Which is about as close to 'assigned' seats as we got that year. =)

Oh dear!
Not a good sign lol!
I think the banquet is gonna be like a 'free for all' in the seating department... Definitely better than assigned seating where you might end up at a table where you don't know anyone...
Again I say 'anything that makes it easier on the con organisers' is a bonus  ;) ;) ;)

The convention ticket doesn't include entry to the banquet so no it (the seat assignment) wouldn't be used for banquet seating

We are thrilled to announce that Colin Cunningham has agreed to provide the after-dinner entertainment following the optional banquet on the Friday evening.

Colin will be performing on stage, on saxophone, along with his five-piece soul funk band What The Funk!
Most of their music will be from the 60's and 70's, so the perfect opportunity to wear your Vangroovy 1960's outfit!

Fancy dress is not compulsory, but you do need to have a ticket to the banquet in order to enjoy Colin's gig.

Full details on the banquet including price will be announced shortly.

Great news about Colin and his band performing, oh I so hope I get a banquet ticket!!! He's such a talented guy! He was on the local CTV news last week in a spot they do at the end of the news where they feature ordinary people doing what they like doing. He was playing his sax in a park and told the story of how he started out on arriving in Vancouver by living in his car and playing on the streets, he was awesome. He said one thing led to another and he's always grateful for all the breaks and how he got to where he is today. A wonderful example of another working guy in Vancouver. I met him a few years back and he's a nice down to Earth guy and his magic tricks are amazing, it was a joy to see the spoon and coin bending trick up close, still none the wiser how it's done!  :)

Paul Brown is now in the UK and currently making his way up to our neck of the woods, in time for lunch today!!
There then follows much talking, discussions, planning, wine-drinking over the next 48 hours. Hopefully the end result will be us in a position to launch all the extra add-ons etc.

Not at this stage no, though some people have so it's all good. We will definitely need them all when the actual tickets go on sale. Its really just an idea of quantity we are after from the registration forms.

The Homecoming Vangroovy Banquet
Friday 9th September 2015

  • Entry into a draw to win a seat at the Top Table with Richard Dean Anderson

Two questions RIchard :
- Do the other guests (Amanda, Michael ...) will be at the banquet too?

If your answer is "yes"... here is my second question:
- So, why would you not do a draw to win a seat at the table with Amanda, Michael too? (you can ask to people with which Guest they would like to be at dinner...

Personaly, I would like to participate into a draw to be at the table with RDA. I love all stars in SG1 of course, but RDA... is different!!  ::) It could be a really marvelous luck and gift to me. ;D
And if least people are in competition, it will be more chance to win... ;)

Thank you Richard...

Now that it's almost 2016, has there been a date decided for the sale of the banquet, cruise, and tour tickets in the Members Area? Or will we receive an email notification? I'm trying to set aside a few $$$$. ;)

Hi Richard,
I'm having a problem paying for a reservation for the banquet. I had reservations for myself and Robin Nash and when I went to pay, it would only let me pay for one, and now it won't let me back in to pay for Robin's, it says  she doesn't have one. What do. I need to do?

Thanks

NOTE : if you have not yet reserved/bought a ticket to the banquet you can still do so before 29th February to be included in the top table draw

BANQUET RESERVATIONS (http://eepurl.com/bRn2Sb)

A couple of exciting add-ons to the add-ons...

The Vangroovy Banquet
We will be drawing the first two winners to sit at the top table* with Richard Dean Anderson on March 1st, as a thanks to everyone who has paid for their banquet ticket by the 29th February.

So if you reserved a seat but have yet to pay, please make sure you do so by the 29th to be in the draw. You have a better chance of winning a seat at this point because the banquet is not yet sold out. Further draws will be made later on.

Plus, don't forget that one lucky attendee will be drawn at random during the closing ceremony to win the Stargate Legacy Coverstone Heirloom, valued at CAD$1750, courtesy of Legends

...and the winners are...

Dale Vince, OBE makes the draw at his Ecotricity headquarters in Stroud. Dale is also honorary patron for Sea Shepherd UK. He received his Order of the British Empire medal from the Queen in 2004 for services to the environment.
The two lucky winners are E20 Kerstin Reisse and N03 Francis Hogle, who will be joining Richard Dean Anderson at the banquet Top Table. Congratulations!

Ecotricity History - 1995

Dale was on the verge of building his first windmill, five years after starting out he realised that one of the big obstacles to building more windmills was the need to get a fair price for the electricity. He went to meet the MEB, who were at that time the local monopoly energy company – they laughed at the idea of green electricity and basically offered the kind of price monopolies do – a rubbish one.

And so the idea was born; to cut out the middleman and start an energy company, to reach the end user with this new Green Electricity, to get a fair price – to enable windmill building.

The energy market was just being liberalised and for the first time it was possible to start an energy company and that’s just what we did.

We spent that first year (1995) studying the market and designing a new way to supply electricity – through a model we called ‘Embedded Supply’ - basically using the local grid to match local customers to local generation. Sounds obvious enough, but it had never been done before.

Dale has been a supporter of Sea Shepherd since first meeting Captain Paul Watson several years ago – a meeting which Captain Paul Watson wrote a commentary about called: ‘Encounters with a man of power’.

“Sea Shepherd is the most inspirational NGO on the planet,” says Dale. “What they do is truly awesome. They put themselves on the front line, in the cross hairs between the hunters and their would-be victims. Their own brand of non-violent, but very direct action is effective not just in protecting sea life, but in getting these issues to the forefront of public consciousness – right where they need to be.”

Whlie it is disappointing that What The Funk with Colin Cunningham are no longer able to perform at The Homecoming, as always we understand when work comes in and wish Colin all the best with his new venture. Gatecon won't be the same without him though.

We are very pleased to announce that we have secured a new band to supply the after-dinner entertainment at the banquet, and they are really ideal in terms of the 1960's theme we have going on.

Vancouver's very own Beatles experience, The Day Trippers will be joining us on Friday 9th September playing all the hit Beatles songs from 10pm until late, following on from Gary Jones stand-up routine with special guest Ellie Harvie.

Testimonials :

"The Day Trippers were a huge success at our banquet, so thank you so much for that. We had great feedback from the delegates. I don’t think I have seen the dance floor so packed right up to  the end of the evening... and we all knew all the words to every song, and just kept singing!"

– Cecilia

“The Day Trippers got the crowd up and jiving to 60s rock n blues at the beautiful setting of Deep Cove this evening! Great nostalgia! Talented band with amazing harmonies, riffs and rhythms just like the original band!”

Do you have a ticket to the Homecoming Banquet?
If so how do you fancy bidding on one of six seats to sit at the Top Table with Richard Dean Anderson?

Starting tonight and every night this week (at 8pm BST) we will be releasing one seat at the table. By staggering the auctions across the week that gives everyone the best opportunity to place bids.

Each auction will run for seven days so you have plenty of time to get in on the bidding action.

Don't forget you must already have a ticket to the banquet in order to take part. Any bids from non-ticket holders will be void.

Winners must complete payment by Paypal within 24 hours of auction end or we may re-list the seat.
There will be one last seat made available through a free draw performed at the opening ceremony.

Only the winning bidders can sit at the Top Table - seats are non-transferable.

You can head over to GATECON AUCTIONS (http://auctions.gatecon.com) and set up your account now if you like, although the first auction will not be visible until the start time.

IMPORTANT: the auctions are NOT linked to the Member's Area, and you will need to set up a new user name and password to take part. You do not need to supply your address but please include your Seat Number in the address field.

You have to understand the issue when arranging a menu for a banquet like this. The hotel offered us just three options. Meat was clearly one, as was vegetarian. That left us deciding between chicken or fish. it was decided that chicken was the more popular and, in fact, was the right way to go as most people have chosen that meal. Apologies if  you are disappointed Sue and hope your banquet experience won't be spoilt as a result of there not being fish available :)

Now that I'm putting together my packing list, I'm trying to decide if I should wear my O'Neill cosplay to the banquet or wear plain clothes. Trying to choose which days to wear the costume is hurting my brain!

1960's theme is the go! See first page! ☺

yea... I know. i don't have a 60's costume, that's why the dilemma. I want to get as much use out of my SG-1 attire as possible, but I also don't want to overheat.

Yup I'm in Seattle, our weather is pretty similar, I'll get it figured out soon, I don't have much of a choice!! :)

XJENNERSOX.....bought everything for my 60's outfit at Value Village and Goodwill.   Think I spent a total of $30.00 for both, including a hat and wig.

Thanks but I don't really have any interest in getting a 60's outfit and don't have any money to spare at this point!

Due to a lack of planning on my part (actually I lost track of time and kept telling myself I had plenty of time), the only vangroovy outfit I was able to come up with on time was a tie dye shirt, bell bottom jeans (sort of), and a headband, but I forgot sandals/60s footwear. Is there any place within walking distance or short taxi ride from the hotel where I could get some 60s looking footwear and 60s accessories?

Thanks.

Me too, but I cannot find anything in my closet, its all gone (plus those clothes wouldn't fit anyway because the longer they stay in my closet the more they shrink!)

There's a shopping mall literally down the street from the hotel.  I don't know that they have 60's specific footwear, but you can give it a shot.
