As you are probably aware we have been giving much thought to holding an event in 2017. However, after running through various scenarios we have come to the same conclusion each time - as much as we would have loved to hold an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Stargate SG-1, 2017 is not a viable proposition.
This is due to a number of factors : the time element, availability, or not, of actors, and most importantly whether we think we would sell enough tickets to cover costs.
Many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to our earlier survey. Whilst the comments received showed a roughly equal preference for August and September there was just nowhere near enough interest in 2017 overall to make it worth the risk. Understandably a few people were concerned about funding their return trip to Vancouver on an annual basis, whilst others had already organised their holidays for this year.
As we are sure you can appreciate the costs involved in staging an event like this are very high and so we have to be as sure as we can be that the event will be self-sufficient. We cannot afford to fund it from our own pockets.
But on a far more positive note we are now in talks with the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel for next year with provisional dates reserved for the 14th - 16th September 2018. This gives us all some extra breathing space, not to mention time to save up. As usual we will likely add on some extra optional activities for you a couple of days either side of the main convention dates. We have already spoken to JR Bourne, Colin Cunningham, Alexis Cruz and Tony Amendola and all are very interested in attending. We will also be sending out invitations to Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping amongst others so will keep you posted on those developments, plus advance details on ticket prices and release dates.
So enjoy 2017 and watch out for updates from us. We will keep the current mailing list going for the next few months. Once tickets to the next event go on sale we will start a fresh mailing list.
In other news Allan is now working on the footage from The Homecoming and we will be announcing details of sales of clips when he is ready. We will also shortly be auctioning off a Skype call with Robin Dunne and the artist and publisher of his upcoming graphic novel Rattletrap. Full details to follow.
All the best from the Gatecon Team.
