I'm trying to figure out how many days and in what areas I want to sign up.  I'm interested in several areas and have some questions;

1.  Registration  - I would also like to do the Harbour Cruise.  Would this be doable?
2.  Monitor doors/panels - I'm assuming that if I'm "on duty" I wouldn't be able to take pictures, right?  Would it be possible to sit down during some panels so I could shoot some photos?
3.  I'll be arriving in Van on the 6th.  Would help be needed prior to the 8th for set-up?  If my friend can't make it, I would be willing to help with that.

There are a few other areas I'd like to work.  Maybe I should just check "wherever needed"

I didn't even think about the whole working registration and going on the cruise thing, thanks for asking that!

Hi Pam,

Yes the reg desk will be open before and after the cruise to let those going on it register so will also be the chance to work the desk as well - unless of course absolutely everybody wants to go on the cruise in which case we may have to do registration en route hehe.

Seriously though, depending on the uptake for the cruise, we will likely set aside a certain hour or so after we get back that will be registration for cruise goers only. Those not taking part in the cruise will be encouraged to register during the cruise hours.

Once the panel is underway it should be fine for you to get some shots in...just remember it will be non flash after the first five minutes.

Will definitely let you know about any pre-event help. Thanks.

Those things are SO ANNOYING!!!!

Haha they are pretty annoying - and must spoil the fun of trying to fit everyone  in the shot...down a bit, up a bit lol

They really only annoy the Jaffa Cree out of me when I'm at a convention with 10,000+ attendees and I'm trying to move people along so the fire marshal doesn't shut us down, lol! But yeah you do miss out kinda on the move left, no move right, oh dang I cut that persons head off haha! But I do see the benefit from time to time.

I'm still thinking of volunteering. I did so for the 2008 event and had a blast working in the Legends room. This year, though, I'm going with a newbie who's never been to a big convention. I'm pleased and excited to show her everything and experience it through her eyes, but she wasn't keen on volunteering herself. Being so new and not really knowing too many people yet, I think she was afraid she would be abandoned.

If I can convince her of the fun of volunteering, is there a chance we could be put together to work? That way, she would at least start off hanging with someone she knows and will feel more comfortable and less out of her element.

I'm certain that by the end of the weekend, she'll have a ton new friends though.

I'm betting it won't take all weekend for her to find a bunch of new friends!

Hi! I'm trekz, David, from Chicago, Illinois, US. I'm very excited to be going to my first Gatecon, with my significant other, Shelley. I've been to a few Stargate cons in Chicago, including the last couple. As you can guess by my moniker, I have attended quite a few conventions dealing with another sci-fi series starting with the word Star, lol. Looking forward to meeting lots of the friendly people who've already posted. We were in Vancouver in September, and are excited to go back. Shelley is looking forward to going to Victoria, which I've visited a couple times on my own, plus seeing a bit more of Vancouver than downtown, Chinatown and Stanley Park, all of which we enjoyed!

We'll be in seats K26 and K 27.

I love just getting on the Skytrain and randomly getting off places Richmond is quite different from the main part of Vancouver and less touristy which is what I like, the less touristy stuff.

Victoria is fun, it's been a while since I've gone. I love their museums, especially The Wax museum.

Also, welcome!
