Just checked into the hotel and so excited! What time is dinner at Harold's tonight? I looked through the posts but didn't see a time (although it's quite possible that I probably just missed it).
Thanks!

Itinerary & Activities / Re: The Vangroovy Harbour Cruise
« on: September 06, 2016, 12:24:43 AM »
PLEASE remember to bring your sunblock, sunglasses and possibly a hat on the cruise. Between the sunshine and the water reflection, you'll be burnt in no time if you aren't protected! And no one wants to go through the rest of the weekend feeling like a lobster! Also, recall you'll be on a boat with narrow walkways between floors and slippery decks. Don't wear heels or slick-soled shoes. Water sandals or sneakers are your best bet!

As I am trying to pack, I decided to re-read some of the posts. When I came to yours, I started chuckling. Why you ask? Because I always over pack and never use everything I bring with me. I am a chronic over packer! I just thought it was funny that I was reading a reminder to bring stuff (practical as they may be) that i hadn't thought of  :-\ and I am already having difficulty packing stuff I did think of.
Thanks for the reminder though!  8)  Great suggestions that will force me to go shopping once more.

Itinerary & Activities / Re: Welcome Party and The Vangroovy Banquet
« on: September 05, 2016, 01:27:56 PM »
Due to a lack of planning on my part (actually I lost track of time and kept telling myself I had plenty of time), the only vangroovy outfit I was able to come up with on time was a tie dye shirt, bell bottom jeans (sort of), and a headband, but I forgot sandals/60s footwear. Is there any place within walking distance or short taxi ride from the hotel where I could get some 60s looking footwear and 60s accessories?

Thanks.

Did the volunteer assignments go out? I have not received anything yet.
Thanks.

I have no idea how to enter the contest to get a extra photo Opp  with RDA at cabin and what boat ride I have no idea What you are talking about registrations I don't understand any of this

The boat ride is the harbor cruise that is being offered on Thursday for an extra fee. The RDA extra photo shoot at the cabin is an auction. Top 20 bids win. I believe there will be one additional spot for that photo shoot that will be raffled off at a later date. To access the RDA photo shoot auction, you log into the Member’s Area of the website (this is where you purchased your admission ticket for Gatecon).

Hope this helps.

This opportunity is so exciting! In the event I am fortunate enough to be one of the top 20, I have a couple questions:
1. Will we be able to get a second copy of the print from this photo shoot and how much would that cost? I definitely want a print to have RDA autograph as a personal item but I would also like to have an additional print without the autograph, or at least the JPG that I can print myself. Is that possible (either the extra print or JPG)?
2. Since the transportation to the photo shoot is happening immediately after the harbor cruise, are we going to have opportunity to change clothes before the shoot if we don't want to wear our 60s clothes?
Thanks!

I am not sure what I put on my volunteer form for but I believe it was only for a short period of time on the first day (since I didn't know what to expect). However, after looking at the tentative itinerary/schedule and their is redundancy build into the schedule, I am also available Friday or Saturday afternoon if you need me.
Thanks.

I am pretty sure I volunteered but I don't remember and it may have only been for a couple hours. I may have been non-committal (as far as how much time I could obligate) because I didn't know what to expect and I may be visiting family across the border. If you find yourself short handed during certain times, I will be happy to add additional hours if I am available. If I didn't volunteer, let me know or just add me to the volunteer list. Since this is my first convention and I don't know anyone, I know this will be the best way to meet people.
Thanks!

Itinerary & Activities / Re: Costume Competitions
« on: July 12, 2016, 08:37:13 PM »
This costume thing is stressing me out.  I'm really incompetent at this kind of stuff, but from my ren faire experience, I know it's always more fun to dress up.  Since I'm getting a little older, I really don't want to have to wear some kind of go-go dress, but the only women's bell bottoms I find online are denim, which seem wrong for a "banquet".  I don't sew, so I'd be buying something.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm not wanting to go all out to enter a competition, just wanting to join in on the fun.

I feel your pain. I also have been stressing out about a costume since I agree that it is a great way to join in on the fun. However, I am a bit of an introvert and have never really done anything like this. I think I found some bell bottoms that might work but I feel weird wearing it. Is that too funny? Also, I started thinking since I am also a little older woman. I am also Chinese. Did Chinese hippies exist in the 60s??  :)

The Homecoming 8th-12th September 2016 / Re: Travel stuff
« on: June 13, 2016, 12:09:50 AM »
Wasn't sure where to post this. In the US news outlets today, it was reported that Canada had begun the process of no longer accepting Visa credit cards. It will continue to take Mastercard credit cards. I do think it goes for the debit cards also since there's a fee to use the Visa name. I can't attend Gatecon so I don't have to worry about this at this time. Many banks here in the US use the Visa brand on debit cards and credit cards. :(

The only article I read in The Wall Street Journal was that Walmart Canada will stop accepting Visa - I haven't seen anything in the news beside that.

What about Rainbow Francks? It would be great to meet him. Didn't see his name on the list though.

Gategoers at The Homecoming / Re: Holiday Insurance
« on: March 09, 2016, 06:06:35 PM »
Apologies if this isn't in the right catagory but I'm looking for holiday insurance and wondered who other people were using or would recommend.  I have some health issues so that is a consideration on the one I choose.

Thanks in advance

~Sam

When I purchase travel insurance, I usually visit squaremouth.com. This allows you to customize the travel insurance you are looking for and read reviews about the different carriers and the types of insurance they offer. Some of the carriers I have looked at will waive the pre-existing condition if you purchase the insurance within so many days of paying for your trip. I live in the United States so I don't know if these carriers cover travelers from other countries.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, Im from the UK and travelling alone but sharing a room.

Any other Brits going as would love to get in touch and meet you at the Con too?

I am nervous as never travellled alone before let alone to Canada.

Pleeaaaaseee get in touch, even if you are from other countries.  |I'd rather not be a loner  :(

My name is Janet and i am 54 from Essex and probably be one of the older ones going.  I have a ticket for the banquet but only only the reserve list for the Cruise and Tour.  Would love to do other things too but initially photo/autographs of the celebs.

Thanks

Janet

Hi Janet. This is Jeannette again. I got your message and will send you a reply probably tonight but don't worry. There seems to be a small group of us 50 somethings that are attending and traveling alone. Maybe we can all share a table at the banquet so we don't feel so alone. l will write more later. Do you know yet when you plan on arriving?

Hi there my name is Janet and i live in UK.  This will be my first long convention and first overseas and am very nervous.  I am coming alone but luckily have been invited to share a room from a lovely lady from Oklahoma.  I don't want to be a loner and hope to meet some Facebook friends and meet new ones too.  I am old, i am 54 anyone around my age going, although I don't care what age you are really.  I have booked ticket for Banquet too.
Contact or email me please, look forward to meeting new people.  I will be arriving on 7th but dont know what time yet.
Any advice would be good too please.

Hi Janet. I am Jeannette, 57 years old, and also coming alone. This is also my first convention. I am a bit nervous because I am not used to traveling by myself. My traveling companion has always been my son, who is an adult now :-[. I am really looking forward to this event and know we will have a great time! I am going on the cruse, tour, and attending the banquet. Although I am only coming from Michigan, I don't know if I will make it back to Vancouver so figured I'd do all three. Look forward to meeting you.

This is my first GateCon and I am going alone. Could I be added to whatever waiting list you are keeping for this get together? This sounds like fun!
Thanks.
